MAARUIG RADIO STATION, ISLE OF HARRIS, HS3 3AG

Redundant Radio Station Building 49.7 sq.m on 0.275 Acre

Description

The title area is a regularly shaped rectangle extending to 0.275 Acre. An irregularly shaped, smaller area has been fenced with timber post and wire fencing incorporating a metal vehicle entrance gate. The site houses a building of brick/block construction, with a painted roughcast external finish under a profiled metal sheet roof. Access is via a timber door or a set of double timber doors at a raised level suitable for loading vans. At the rear of the building there is a metal access tower. There is a tarmac path leading from the old road to a parking area in front of the building, the remainder of the ground is rough grass. Internally the single door leads to a small entrance vestibule with what was a toilet directly opposite. The WC and WHB have been removed and the soil stack pipe covered over. The remainder of the accommodation is split into two rooms. The floor is concrete with either lino tiles or quarry tiles laid over. Walls have a painted plaster finish. Lighting is by a mixture of fluorescent strip lights and pendant lights, and there is no heating system. The building has been disconnected from mains supply of electricity. There is a second, smaller rectangle of land situated a short distance up hill above and to the south west of the site.

Directions

Traveling south from Stornoway take the A859 towards Tarbert. Close to the head of Loch Seaforth you will note the signs welcoming you to Harris. Continue towards Tarbert and the road climbs up to the shoulder of a hill called Gormul Maraig. The property is visible from the road at this point. The old line of the A859 provides access. Drive past the north end of the old road (which is blocked off) and turn right onto the old road after about 0.3 miles.

Location

Lewis and Harris form the north section of the Western Isles and can be reached by air to Stornoway, the main town on the islands or by ferry, either Ullapool to Stornoway or Uig (North Skye) to Tarbert, the main settlement on Harris. The property is approximately 30 miles from Stornoway and 9 miles north of Tarbert. Harris is the southern third of the island and the line of separation between it and Lewis is marked by a range of mountains. The property is set amongst these hills in an undeveloped area. The main A859 road between Stornoway and Tarbert used to form the north east boundary of the site. The road has been re-aligned in this area and lies a short distance to the east but the old road still provides easy access to the site from the south end.

Planning

The property may be suitable for a range of alternative uses. Interested parties should make enquires with the planning officer for the Western Isles Council (Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar) who can be contacted on 01851 703773.
